From Vini Franchetti (of Passopisciaro fame) comes this complex stunner of a volcanic rosso from Sicily's north slope.
+ GRAPES: A 'super-Sicilian' blend primarily of Nerello Mascalese, with a splash of Cesanese and Petite Verdot grapes. A bit off-beat, but sublime.
+ PROFILE: Dry, medium-plus body. Black cherry, volcanic berry, wisp-o-smoke, and a saline-brine Mediterranean minerality.
+ FUNDAMENTALS: Hand-harvested grapes. Wild yeast. Fermented in a combination of stainless steel and concrete, and a small portion is aged in large, used barrels. Vegan. 50mgl of sulfur. 400 cases made per annum.
+ PAIRINGS: While this is not a shy wine, it would pair beautifully with grilled fish or meat dishes, and southern Italian classics like caponata and pasta alla norma.
